Nama Gloria Ramirez menjadi perbincangan hangat publik dan kalangan medis. Ini terjadi lantaran Ramirez memiliki kelainan aneh yang tak pernah terjadi sebelumnya. Kelainan itu, membuat wanita kelahiran 11 Januari 1963 ini memeroleh julukan sebagai Si Wanita Beracun.
Gloria Ramirez, tinggal di Riverside, Calif, Inggris bersama dengan suami dan dua anaknya, Brian Taylor. Mereka hidup bahagia sebagaimana keluarga kecil lainnya.
Namun semuanya berubah tatkala pada 19 Februari 1994, Ramirez tiba-tiba mengalami keanehan.
Denyut jantungnya meningkat, sementara tekanan darahnya menurun drastis. Ia mengalami kesulitan bernafas hingga tak mampu berkomunikasi.
Ramirez dilarikan ke Rumah Sakit General Hospital di Riverside untuk menjalani penanganan gawat darurat.
Dalam pemeriksaan awal, Ramirez yang saat itu baru berusia 31 tahun ini diketahui sudah menderita kanker serviks stadium akhir.
Tim medis mengambil langkah prioritas untuk mengembalikan kesadarannya dengan menyuntikan obat. Sayangnya, tak ada satupun yang berhasil mengembalikan fungsi-fungsi vital tubuhnya.
Keanehan mulai terjadi ketika perawat membuka bajunya untuk memasang alat pacu jantung.
Mereka menemukan kandungan minyak pada tubuh Ramirez. Mereka juga mencium bau buah-buahan dan bau bawang dari mulutnya.
Keanehan semakin bertambah setelah perawat mengambil sample darahnya.
Darah Ramirez mengandung bau amoniak, dan ada partikel berwarna di dalam darahnya.
Dokter dan tim medis yang memelajari sample darah itu menyimpulkan bahwa ada yang tak beres dengan tubuh pasien ini.
Puncak keanehan terjadi ketika seorang perawat yang berada satu ruangan dengan Ramirez tiba-tiba menderita sakit kepala. Menyusul perawat lainnya mengalami sesak nafas. Dan perawat ketiga bahkan sampai pingsan. Ketika tersadar, perawat itu tak mampu menggerakan lengan maupun kakinya.
Apa yang terjadi sebenarnya? Tak ada seorang pun mengetahuinya.
Enam petugas medis yang mencoba menyelamatkan nyawa Ramirez gagal karena mereka menderita keluhan kesehatan yang aneh. Mulai dari pusing-pusing, sesak nafas, hingga megnalami kelumpuhan sementara. Total menurut laporan ada sekitar 23 perawat yang mengalami keluhan aneh.
Akibat tak memeroleh perawatan maksimal, Ramirez akhirnya meninggal dunia pada malam harinya.
Berdasarkan laporan sejumlah keanehan tubuh Ramirez, pihak rumah sakit memberlakukan perlakukan khusus terhadap jasad Ramirez. Mereka mengirimkan tim khusus dengan pakaian pelindung untuk memeriksa ruangan tempat Ramirez di rawat atau tempat mayat Ramirez.
Tim ini mencoba menganalisa tanda-tanda adanya gas beracun, zat kimia maupun kandungan zat-zat aneh lainnya. Namun tim ini tak menemukan apapun yang bisa menjawab kenapa para perawat sampai pingsan.
Kecurigaan kemudian mengarah pada tubuh Ramirez sendiri.
Tim ini kemudian membawa jasad Ramirez dengan menggunakan kantung berbahan alumunium tertutup. Tapi otopsi belum dilakukan hingga hampir sepekan setelah kematiannya. Otopsi sendiri dilakukan di ruangan khusus oleh tim khusus dengan pakaian pelindung.
Dalam otopsi yang dilakukan pada 25 Maret 1994, tim medis menyimpulkan bahwa terdapat tanda-tanda zat berupa Tylenol, Lidocaine, codeine dan tigan dalam tubuh Ramirez. Tiga sendiri merupakan obat anti mual yang bisa membentuk amonia. Inilah yang menjadi jawaban kenapa darah Ramirez berbau seperti amoniak.
Sementara laporan dari ahli toksikologi menunjukan bahwa tubuh Ramirez mengandung dimethyl sulfone dalam darah dan jaringan tubuhnya. Zat dimethyl sulfone ini memang terbentuk secara alami dalam tubuh manusia yang berfungsi untuk memecah zat tertentu yang masuk ke tubuh.
Permasalahannya, Ramirez memiliki dimethyl sulfate tiga kali lebih banyak dari jumlah normal. Ini kemungkinan disebabkan oleh penggunaan bahan obat untuk menyembuhkan kanker rahim yang dideritanya.
Sebagai catatan, jika Dimethyl Sulfae yang berbentuk gas ini terhirup maka akan menyebabkan kejang, kelumpuhan hingga kehilangan kesadaran. Dari 20 gejala yang dideskripsikan oleh staf medis malam itu, 19 di antaranya cocok dengan gejala orang yang terkena uap dimetil sulfat.
Adapun, tiga minggu kemudian, pada 12 April 1994, pejabat daerah mengumumkan bahwa Ramirez meninggal karena gagal jantung akibat gagal ginjal yang disebabkan oleh kanker serviks stadium akhir. Ramirez didiagnosis mengidap kanker enam minggu sebelum kematiannya.
Otoritas setempat butuh waktu hingga dua bulan untuk bisa menguburkan jasad Ramirez karena setelah meninggal pun masih memiliki kandungan racun. Orang-orang terlalu takut untuk mendekati jasadnya.
Pada akhirnya, julukan Gloria Ramirez Si Wanita Beracun ini menjadi catatan sedih terakhir seorang perempuan penderita kanker yang mencoba berbagai obat untuk menyembuhkan penyakitnya.
